SWAN Commends NSC Leadership for Prompt Reward of Commonwealth Games Medallists, Urges Athletes to Sustain Winning Momentum
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commended the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, and Director General of the Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for the transparent and prompt disbursement of cash rewards to Team Nigeria athletes who have won medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin through the Association's Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo in a statement on Sunday said the immediate presentation of financial rewards to medal-winning athletes at the competition venue, with the balance paid directly into their personal accounts, represents a commendable departure from past practices and reflects the NSC's commitment to transparency, accountability and welfare of Nigerian athletes.
Presence Benjamin also hailed increase in the athletes and coaches' rewards after winning medals at the Games.
He noted that the initiative has sent a strong message that excellence, hard work and patriotism will always be recognised and rewarded, adding that the gesture serves as a significant morale booster capable of inspiring athletes to strive for greater success throughout the Games.
The President of SWAN said he believes that timely recognition of athletes' achievements not only enhances their confidence but also motivates other members of Team Nigeria to give their best in pursuit of podium finishes.
The Association therefore, urged the athletes to reciprocate the confidence reposed in them by the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission by remaining focused, disciplined and determined to win more medals for the country.
SWAN also congratulated Nigeria's medal winners for making the nation proud through their outstanding performances and expressed optimism that Team Nigeria would continue to record greater successes as the competition progresses.
The Association further applauded the leadership of the National Sports Commission for introducing reforms that have restored confidence in sports administration in Nigeria, particularly through policies that place athletes' welfare at the centre of sports development.
The SWAN President reaffirmed the association 's commitment to supporting the National Sports Commission in its efforts to reposition Nigerian sports for sustained excellence.
The Association pledged to continue promoting positive narratives, constructive engagement and professional sports journalism that will contribute to the growth and development of sports in the country.
The Association expressed confidence that under the leadership of Malam Dikko and Hon. Olopade, Nigerian sports will continue to witness remarkable progress, improved governance and greater achievements on the international stage.
SWAN called on all stakeholders to continue supporting Team Nigeria as the athletes strive to bring more glory to the country at the Commonwealth Games and beyond.
