Glamour as top personalities grace Newstap/ SWAN Five Star Award .



It was a night of glamour, entertainment, comedy and splendor  as the second edition of the annual  Newstap/ SWAN Five Star Award came to a successful end.


Held at the Blessing Hall of the iconic Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos, it attracted top administrators from the National Sports Commission, ( NIS), led by the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, National Institute For Sports top management led by the Registrar, Belford  Benson,  management of Nilayo Sports Limited,  top NFF and NNL officials, top Bayelsa State Government  officials, ex- internationals as well as  stakeholders in Nigerian Sports.

In his opening address, the Chairman of the occasion Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye ,  the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Grassroots Sports, commended the organisers for not making the award an all comers affair but nominated those who have really contributed in the development  of the country's sports.

According to him, the award is unique because when you look at the profiles of the awardees, you'll be convinced that they deserve the accolades.

" I decided to be the chairman of this occasion because of the credibility of the award. When you look at those recognized in the maiden edition and those being recognized today, you'll agree with me that the organisers did a thorough job and I commend them for that.

He described the award as top notch just as he charged the awardees to see it as a call for more action in the country's sports ecosystem.

" As I congratulate the awardees, I also want to charge them to see this award as the beginning of more recognition that will come their way and they should not relent in the good job they are doing to move the country's vsports forward", he stated 

Also speaking, National President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Isaiah Benjamin noted that SWAN as the umbrella body of all sports journalists in the country decided to partner with Newstap because of it's credibility and was happy that the partnership is receiving kudos from all Nigerians.

The SWAN President reminded Nigerians that the body being the watch dog of sports in the country is partnering Newstap to organize the award as part of it's statutory duty to recognize Nigerians who have through sports impacted on the lives of the youths of the country 

Isaiah while congratulating the awardees, noted that SWAN will continue to encourage Nigerians who dedicate their money, time, energy and resources to the development of the country's sports.

In his welcome address, Publisher of leading online medium, Newstap.com.ng Mr. George Aluo explained that the award was instituted to celebrate individuals and organizations that have made significant impact in the development and promotion of sports in Nigeria; saying that he's happy that the award is keeping to its mandate 

Aluo who is the Chairman of Nigeria National League as well as a board member of NFF, promised that the organisers will continue to maintain the integrity of the award even as he thanked those who attended the event.

Those who received the award includes the Governor of Bayelsa State Duoye Diri who was represented by the state's Commissioner of Sports Daniel Igali, DG/CEO National. Institute for Sports Comrade Phillip Shaibu, Chief Executive  Officer of Nilayo Sports Limited, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Grassroots Football Promoter/ Philanthropist, Dr. Chief Robert Daniel Onyeani  and Proprietor of Yacateco Boxing Promotions who also doubles as Vice President of Nigeria Boxing Federation, Hon. Omolei Yakubu Imadu.

Three referees in Nigeria have been sanctioned for offences related to  improper handling of matches assigned to them.  In week 8 matches of the NPFL, three of the referees who handled two different matches have been suspended indefinitely by the NFF Referees Committee.  While Mohammed B Tuta of Adamawa and Benue's Ben Japhet, Referee and Assistant Referee 1, respectively of the Kano Pillars vs Shooting Stars game were punished for what the NFF Referees Committee accused them of "acting in manners outside the provisions of the laws of the game and brings the game into disrepute", the letter signed by the  Committee secretary, Ameenu Mohammed indicated that the Nassarawa against Rangers referee, Ikechukwu Taiwo of Rivers State was sanctioned for awarding "unjustified penalty" awarded. War Against Poor Officiating in NPFL intensifies as NFF suspends Centre referee, Usman, Assessor indefinitely.

It appears that the present board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and NPFL are stamping out their zero tolerance to poor officiating as a centre referee, Ishaya Usman from Gombe State and the match assessor have been suspended indefinitely from all football matches. According to a statement signed by Mohammed Ameenu on behalf of the Chairman, NFF Refereeing Development Committee, the suspended referee will no longer officiate any match until further notice. The statement blamed the referee for ignoring a glaring penalty situation that adversely affected the outcome of the match between Kano Pillars and Abia Warriors on January 19, 2026. "Such an action was adjudged not in line with the provisions the Laws of the Game," the statement added.
