Elegbeleye Harps on the Integrity of the League, Refuses to Compromise standard on Sunshine Stars Relegation Threat

Chairman, Board of Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye has stated in clear terms that impartiality, neutrality and integrity of the league is of utmost important to him than aligning with any club for undue compromise.


The former Director General, National Sports Commission stated this while fielding questions via phone interview in a popular radio show, Salsa (Kennis 104.1FM with Mix Master Dr. Mitchell Obi. The no nonsense football administrator posited that he is in charge of twenty (20) clubs and not Sunshine Stars, saying he was not ready to jeopardize his personal integrity and the integrity of the Nigeria topmost league for any morsel of portage to favour home club

The soft spoken Ondo State born Football manager who was full of smile used the occasion to play down on those who peddle rumours that he would soon call it quit with the position of the Second Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation and settles for the General Secretary of the nation's Football Governing Body . In his words: " I always enjoy their jokes. I think They always want me to be on their news . This seems to make their news sellable." He jokingly submitted .


Also, on the issues of Sunshine Stars battling Relegation with 7 matches remaining in the 2023/2024 league , the Obafemi Awolowo University graduate unequivocally clarified that he was meant to superintendent the administration of 20 clubs and not to favour any club to cut corners.

"If my hometown club is relegation bound so be it.My integrity is important to me and I don't want the league's integrity to be jeopardised. I don't cut deals.I am a leader not a dealer. NPFL Chairman Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye affirmed.

On the issue of alleged threat of club owners boycotting league on the current financial situation, he hinted that he understands the present economic climate and the risk involved but that may push them to reconsider the abridged league fornat if the prices of good continue to surge.

"We are looking on how to  settle the threat of club owners/administrators boycotting the Premier league and looks ahead on tested abridged league which saves cost and reduces risk. The short distant journey makes the plsyer looks fresh. Abridged league is a tested option of and if the votes go in its favour, so be it". He concluded
