Coast Now Clear For Another AFCON Title, SWAN Hails Super Eagles' Performance Against Indomitable Lions

 



The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated the Super Eagles for their spectacular performance against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon which saw them book quarter-final place in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.


Speaking shortly after the last 16 AFCON 2023 encounter between both sides in Cote d'ivoire, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, in a statement through the Association's Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, Sunday, said the resounding victory has again proven that the Nigerian side look good for a fourth continental title after another clean sheet in the tournament.

Nigeria boast of three AFCON titles since they started participating in the biennial competition.

"Super Eagles have really grown in confidence and general performance at the ongoing Nations Cup. The fact that they have conceded only one goal in four matches shows that there's still much to expected from them.

"Thankfully, they have improved in goal-scoring. Overall, they showed grit against Cameroon who were certainly helpless from start to finish. The team play by Super Eagles was truly fantastic.

"Now, the team comprising the players and officials need to remain focused. Approach each game with its peculiarity. With this in mind, winning another AFCON title," he said.

Nigeria will now face Angola in the quarter-final of the tournament. 

While Angola thrashed Namibia 3-0, Super Eagles silenced Indomitable Lions 2-0, courtesy of Ademola Lookman's brace.

Alleged Poor Officiating; Kano Pillars/3SC Match Officials Suspended, Nasarawa/Rangers Referee

Three referees in Nigeria have been sanctioned for offences related to  improper handling of matches assigned to them.  In week 8 matches of the NPFL, three of the referees who handled two different matches have been suspended indefinitely by the NFF Referees Committee.  While Mohammed B Tuta of Adamawa and Benue's Ben Japhet, Referee and Assistant Referee 1, respectively of the Kano Pillars vs Shooting Stars game were punished for what the NFF Referees Committee accused them of "acting in manners outside the provisions of the laws of the game and brings the game into disrepute", the letter signed by the  Committee secretary, Ameenu Mohammed indicated that the Nassarawa against Rangers referee, Ikechukwu Taiwo of Rivers State was sanctioned for awarding "unjustified penalty" awarded. The three referees were suspended indefinitely.

Shooting Stars unveil new signings, departed players

Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, have confirmed the signing of eight fresh legs to beef up their squad for the second  round of the 2024/25 NPFL season.  A statement issued by the Media Officer of the club, Tosin Omojola, revelaed that the players were signed from both the NPFL and NNL sides.  Some of the new acquisions mentioned include, Sadiq Ibrahim, a sriker from Sunshine Stars,  Omoduemuke Moses, striker from Niger Tornadoes as well as midfielder Okorie Ekeson from Rangers International.  Others are midfielders Ukeme Williams from Miyansar Sport FC, Iraq, and Ephraim Nwachukwu from Osun United.  Meanwhile, the club also announced the drafting of upcoming player, Liuz David, a young professional player into the main team.  In the same vein, the club also announced the departure of eight players namely; Abubakar Aliu, Abbey Benson, Elum Henry, Hassane Sidibe, Bolaji Sakin,Uche Onwuasonanya, Fasanmi Olaniyi and Malachi Ohawume....
