Super Eagles Begin World Cup Qualifying Campaign With a Disappointing Draw Against Lesotho

Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday kickstarted the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign with a paulsating one all draw against 153rd ranked Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

It was a ding dong affairs in the first half of the game as both sides were unable to find the back of the net witha scoreless situation. There was no apparent move by the Eagles who failed to qualify in the last edition of the FIFA World Cup held in.Qatar

Nothing seemed to be technically different at the beginning of the second half as the opponent was the first to even break the deadlock with Crocodiles scoring through Motlomelo Mkwanazi who headed in a corner kick taken by Tshwarelo Bereng to give Lesotho the lead in the 57th minutes.

For every action, there is always a reaction, equal and opposite. The Super Eagles of Nigeria restored parity at 67th minutes of the encounter through Semilogo Ajayi who headed in a corner kick taken by Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho and thus given respite to expect more goals from the Eagles.

Two quick substitutions made by Coach Paseiro only increased pace but lack precision to make impact . Moses Simon dribbled more than enough at the left flank unlike Ademola Lookman who did not show much intent to neutralize the visitors. Terem Moffi found it difficult to control the ball at the vantage position to cause havoc while Joe Aribo inclusion appeared very late. Bruno Onyemaechi, and Ola Aina from left and right flank added significantly less to the pace as the team was unable to break even against the lowlly rated Southern African side in their home soil

Nigeria are now second on the log in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Group C with one point. They will be on the road against Zimbabwe on Sunday, November 11 by 2pm Nigerian time.
